Friday 20thJuly saw The Fenwick in Claughton host a special Portuguese theme night. This proved a huge success, attracting a sell-out crowd to the historic and atmospheric Lune Valley establishment.
The event celebrated the heritage of General Manager Davide Viana, who hails from Monchique on the Algarve. Accompanied by his wife and cat, he came to the UK in 2015, following a marathon three-day car journey. Keen to pursue a career in hospitality, he joined The Fenwick the following year and has since achieved two promotions.
Following a canapé and sparkling wine reception, the guests were treated to a delicious three-course meal that began with a generous, highly flavoursome sharing platter that included goose barnacles, a famous Portuguese shellfish rarely found in the UK. They then proceeded to enjoy a main course chosen from six popular native dishes – including salt baked sea bass with lemon and parsley, chargrilled marinated chicken on the bone and tofu with scrambled eggs and fried potato matchsticks – before sampling a selection of tempting sweets for dessert; these included Pastéis de Nata, a custard tart which is Davide’s all-time favourite dish. Alongside the culinary delights, an informal wine tasting session was held, either at the dinner table or in small groups as per guest preferences. This showcased Davide’s favourite wines, including the famous Green Wine and both light and rich reds.
The Fenwick has been thrilled with the feedback received since the event, with many guests praising the staff for levels of service and enthusiasm that matched the high quality of food. A delighted Davide said:
“I am not just passionate about Portugal because it is my birthplace, but because we have such an exciting and diverse cuisine. Freshness is so important with Portuguese dishes and our Atlantic coastline provides the most wonderful seafood, just like here at the Fenwick!”
As July’s event sold out so quickly and because of the huge waiting list, The Fenwick has already confirmed a second Portuguese night. Featuring a new menu and wine list, this will take place on Friday 28th September. Bookings for this were already being taken at last week’s event.
